Product Description

He never wanted to be a cop but when the bug bit him he couldn't turn his back on the job. It was another type of job...a battle for the streets of New York. Cops were being murdered, bombs were going off, people were dying. It had to be stopped! JIM MOTHERWAY was born in Brooklyn New York, the second of twelve children. He entered the Navy during his senior year in high school and served in the Submarine Service aboard the USS Sea Dog. Upon being honorably discharged he worked for a short period as a telephone installer before entering the New York City Police Department. During his 25 years with the Department he rose through the ranks from uniformed patrolman in Brownsville to Detective Lieutenant in the Major Case Squad, the Arson & Explosion Squad and Organized Crime Control Bureau, among others. Jim received over 16 decorations during his career. The most noteworthy was the one for his involvement in the investigation and successful tracking down and capturing all of the members of the BLA, a radical, domestic terrorist group responsible for the assassination of twelve police officers, and the attempted murder and wounding of scores of other police officers across the country. During this investigation one of the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted," Herman Bell, was tracked down and captured in New Orleans by the Major Case Squad. The second man on the "Ten Most Wanted" list was Twymon Meyers who was killed during a shootout with the Major Case Squad. In 1960 Motherway married his first wife Patricia Donahue. They had nine children (7 sons and 2 daughters). When he retired he founded a security company at JFK Airport. The company grew rapidly and expanded over the next few years to major airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dayton, Cincinnati, Chicago, Newark, Miami and Wilton Connecticut. When his first wife died suddenly in 1993 Motherway sold the company. After two years of retirement from his security business he returned to work as an aide to Hospice pati

When I saw the title I knew immediately what it meant, it was a mantra to recite as you walk out the door. I do the same kind of thing so I thought I might enjoy the book. I definately did!James Motherway started his police career not as someone who longed to be a police officer but a guy who took the test with a friend. Pretty soon he discovered not only did he like it, he was good at it. The story of his career, with its ups and downs, is so interesting you will wish you knew the streets and burroughs of New York so you could make an even better image of the things that happened. Overall you come away realizing that the majority of police officers have integrity and pride. I gained more respect for those that do a job I knew was never for me. Never phoney, often funny, you will certainly enjoy this book.BTW... James Motherway crossed paths during his career with Al Seedman. I recognized the name from reading Seedman's book 'Chief' many years ago, another good read.
